Math
The goals of the math program at Solomon Schechter Day School are for students to know basic math facts, to be good mathematical problem solvers and to be able to apply math to everyday situations.
Teachers at SSDS use the New Mexico State Standards for math as the minimum requirements at each grade level. Teachers use a variety of materials including manipulatives, real-world application, and formula derivation to teach to these standards and to stretch the students’ mathematical thinking beyond the minimal standards.
Students in grades kindergarten through five use the Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Mathematics program. This program was carefully selected for SSDS by the staff to provide a balance between learning basic facts and providing opportunities to apply math in ways that expand children’s critical thinking skills. The program is supplemented with math manipulatives, technology (computers and calculators) and other math materials that either expand or review elements as needed by individual students.
